The Bosphorus from Kabatas: Ferries, Cruises and the Funicular

Kabatas is the hotel's gateway to the water. The F1 funicular runs from Taksim Square down to the shore in a single stop, putting Sehir Hatlari ferries, island boats and the Dolmabahce waterfront within a fifteen-minute reach of the lobby.

The route is always the same: walk four minutes to Taksim Square, take the F1 funicular one stop down to Kabatas, and you are standing between the ferry piers and the tram. Everything on this page starts from that move.

Sehir Hatlari, the city's own ferries

Sehir Hatlari is Istanbul's historic municipal ferry operator, and its boats are the cheapest way to be on the Bosphorus. Fares are distance-based and published on the official price list, which at the time of writing shows Kabatas departures from 62.70 TL and the Bosphorus line at 76.90 TL. Prices are updated by the operator, so check the list before you travel.

For the classic full Bosphorus tour, boats depart from the Bosphorus pier at Eminonu, one tram ride from Kabatas. From Kabatas itself, ordinary commuter ferries to Uskudar and Kadikoy give you thirty minutes on the water for the price of a normal fare, which is the local's version of a cruise.

Princes' Islands direct from Kabatas

The Adalar line sails from Kabatas to the four visitable islands. On the official weekday timetable, the first sailing leaves Kabatas at 06:45 and reaches Buyukada, the largest island, at 08:30, calling at Kinaliada, Burgazada and Heybeliada on the way. Take the earliest boat you can manage in summer; afternoon returns are the crowded ones.

Dolmabahce Palace on the same shore

Practical notes from the hotel

  • Use an Istanbulkart for the funicular and all Sehir Hatlari ferries; buy and load one at Taksim station machines before descending.
  • The funicular queue at Taksim is longest on summer evenings; walking down Inonu Caddesi to Kabatas takes about fifteen minutes if you would rather not wait.
  • Sunset sailings westward light the old city skyline; sit on the right side heading toward Eminonu.
