Go for Abdi Ipekci Street if you want international luxury houses, City's Nisantasi if you want a mall under one roof, and the streets around Tesvikiye Mosque if you want Turkish designers and long cafe lunches. All three sit within the same few blocks.
What Nisantasi is
Travel magazine Afar describes Nisantasi as the posh Upper East Side of Istanbul, home to the city's priciest designer boutiques, concentrated along Tesvikiye and Abdi Ipekci streets. The district's apartment blocks date from the late Ottoman and early Republican years, which gives the shopping a residential, tree-lined setting rather than a mall corridor feel.
Abdi Ipekci Street
This is the marquee address, regularly ranked among Turkey's most expensive retail streets. International houses such as Prada and Rolex keep flagships here, as Istanbul.com's street guide documents, alongside multi-brand boutiques and jewelers. Even window-shopping is worthwhile: the street doubles as a catwalk on weekend afternoons.
City's Nisantasi and the side streets
City's Nisantasi, the district's shopping mall, gathers mid-to-upper international brands, a food court and a cinema in one building near Tesvikiye. Around it, the grid between Tesvikiye Caddesi and Vali Konagi Caddesi hides the more interesting layer: Turkish fashion designers, concept stores, patisseries and some of the city's best-regarded brunch spots. Budget accordingly; this is the most expensive dining postcode on the European side.
Getting there from the hotel
- By metro: walk to Taksim station, ride the M2 one stop to Osmanbey, exit toward Rumeli Caddesi and walk into the district. Door to door it is usually under fifteen minutes.
- On foot: follow Cumhuriyet Caddesi past the Military Museum, then bear right into Tesvikiye. The walk is flat by Istanbul standards and passes good coffee stops.
- Combine it with green space: Macka Democracy Park borders Nisantasi to the south, and the TF1 cable car across the park makes a fun return route, as described in our green spaces guide.
When to go
Weekday mornings are calmest in the boutiques; Saturday is the social peak, when the cafes overflow. Most stores open mid-morning and stay open into the evening. Sunday trading exists but is thinner on the designer street. If your shopping list is broader than luxury, weigh Nisantasi against a day on Istiklal Street, where the high-street brands cluster, or ask at the front desk about the larger malls a few metro stops further north.
